Living In Denmark

Living in Denmark

How was our apartment?
We lived in a small village in a big old house, which is separated into three different apartments. On the ground floor there lived an old lady. On the 1st floor there was our apartment and above us there lived the family who owned our apartment. The apartment was a bit old but looked quite comfortable and welcoming. We were 6 girls sharing this apartment so we had a lot of fun and we never got bored.

What was our daily routine?
Normally all of us had to get up at about the same time to go to work. From 3 o'clock in the afternoon, one after the other returned home. Our first task when we got home was feeding our cat and the fish we had there. Then we normally went to the supermarket and later we started cooking together. In the evening we socialised together or met our other friends we had already got to know. In our free time we went to town. It was just a 10 minute-bike ride to get there. Or we just went for a walk to the fjord. At the weekend we slept in until 10 a.m. Slowly we started the day and in the evening we met other people from our school and played games or went out.

How did we solve our problems when we had some?
When there were problems with the apartment, we called the landlord. If we had problems living together, we talked to each other and tried to solve the problem quickly. When it came to problems at the workplace, we either called our teacher or our contact person in Denmark. But all in all, we never got into trouble or had any problems.

Living in Denmark
Our typical workday started at 8 o’clock. I took a shower and then my colleague and I went for breakfast. After that we started with cleaning the rooms. That was our work task for the morning until noon. When we finished our task, we went into the kitchen and we cooked some lunch for us.
After that we went for a little nap. In the afternoon we didn’t have a daily routine. Mostly we did separate activities. Luis made some music because he wants to be a DJ one day. He found a keyboard where he played for 1-2 hours every day. In that time, I studied for my driving test and did some sports. But we went jogging together 2 times a week.
After we had spent some free time in the afternoon, we had to work for 3-4 hours again in the evening. We helped in the kitchen and we served the food to the guests.
When we had finished work in the evening, we took the bus to the city of Aalborg. We met with our friends either in their apartment or in a bar. Then we took the last bus back home.
On the weekends we always had a lot to do. We went to play minigolf or football. In the second week it was really hot so we went to the Fjordpark, that was a big swimming pool filled with fjord water. Then in the evening we went to our favourite bar where we met up with the other people from our school and we talked about the last week and exchanged some news. After that we went to the very famous party street called “Jomfru Ane Gade”. It was one of my highlights in Denmark. We met so many international people there. I met a guy from El Salvador and I’m still in contact with him. The second highlight for me was the football game between Aalborg BK and FC Kopenhagen. First, we didn’t have tickets but luckily the Danish people are the nicest people on this planet, so they let us in and the atmosphere was magical.
What I found interesting about the Danish life was that all the people are very relaxed. They are always nice and everyone in Denmark spoke a nearly perfect English, it didn’t matter what age. The people were very open, and you easily could find some friends.
We only had one big problem over the 4 weeks. The problem was that the bus to Aalborg was very expensive. So, we had to find a solution. When we asked for a monthly ticket, they told Luis and me that they didn’t have one. When we asked the for the second time at another place, they said there was one and we bought a monthly ticket there. So that problem was solved too.

LIVING IN DENMARK
During my stay in Denmark, I lived in an apartment with five other girls from school. This probably sounds stressful, but it was actually so much fun and some great friendships were made. Even though the flat wasn’t that big and it wasn’t the most luxurious place, we managed to feel comfortable and spent a lot of time there together and played some games, watched TV and cooked pasta. We even had a cat named Fluffy and some fish to take care of. The apartment wasn’t directly in the city centre, so we were really glad to have our bikes to get everywhere we wanted. My usual morning routine was waking up at around 8 o’clock, eating breakfast and getting ready for work. It was a 20 minute-bike ride to get to work. I worked in a big street food hall with about 10 other people from school. My stand offered Greek food and the ambience around it was also very Greek. Even though it was pretty stressful sometimes, we managed to have a great time there. Our boss was super friendly, the food was great, and all the other employees made us feel really welcome there.
In my free time I mostly went to the city. Daily bike rides, some coffee, shopping trips to Netto in the middle of the night and lots of food and some drinks in our regular pub called Victoria’s were simply part of it. Aalborg is a diverse city with loads of really fun and open people. The architecture around the city and all the beautiful street art is something that makes the city a beautiful place. It was definitely never boring. This month was very good for me. I have definitely beome more independent and mature and, in my case, I almost felt like a university student already. If I ever get the chance to do this again, I will not even hesitate to go back.
