retail sales assistant
Lena Hammerer
During my stay in Ireland I got the chance to work in the Debenhams department store in the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. The department store sells a wide range of products including womens, mans and kids clothing, shoes and accessories as well as cosmetic, home appliance and much more. For my work experience I was primarily placed in the womens clothing section. My typical 9 to 5 work day started with a security check-in before heading straight to the floor. The supervisor of the day would then assign me with different tasks depending on today’s schedule and workload.
My most common jobs were:
Most of my colleagues were lovely and tried to diversify my work experience. Although the job of a retail sales assistant sometimes required me to work on a certain task on my own for a longer period of time, I was still able to profit from communicating with customers, my Irish co-workers or work experience students from other nations. All in all, I appreciate this great opportunity to improve my language skills and really enjoyed my time abroad.
My most common jobs were:
- “Tidying” – make sure that all the clothes are in the right place, sorted by size and look nice
- “Recovery” – pick up pieces that fell to the floor and hang them back up properly
- “Fitting Room” – support the customers while trying on clothes and sort the unwanted pieces according to the different store sections
- “The Rail” – put the clothes from the fitting room back to the sales floor
- “Displays” – help the staff to reorganise the appearance of a store section
- “Provide Information” – support the customers with navigating the store and general information

My coworkers were very welcoming and helped my a lot - especially in the first week - when I had to get used to this new environment. It was fun to work with them and they made sure I felt comfortable. I could learn a lot from them and I am happy that I got to meet these nice and wonderful people.

PETWORLD Petshop
Selin Bereiter
I worked in a pet store. In short, I liked it very much there. Both my staff and my superiors were very nice and helpful. I also had a lot to do, in the morning I was allowed to clean the cages of the animals and give them their food. Throughout the day I had to scan prices or rearrange the animal accessories on the shelves. The working hours were very pleasant and it was also great to work with animals. I fell in love especially with the hamsters. I could talk a lot with the staff and so I could improve my English. I also got along very well with everyone and I am really happy to have met these people.

Fettercairn youth Horse project
rebecca moosmann
In Ireland i got the chance to work at the Fettercairn Youth Horse Project. It is a stable where you can take horse riding lessons and even therapy lessons. Personally, the way to work was a bit longer but I didn't mind it. In the mornings we usually had to clean the stables, get the horses that have been needed for the lessons, clean and tack up the horses and fill their waterbuckets. In the afternoon we were obliged to do further cleaning, get horses from and put horses back on the field and help with leading lessons. In the therapy lessons we had to lead the horses and make sure that the child on the horse feels confident. Furthermore when there was nothing to do, which was rare, we asked our supervisors if they needed help. The working climat was really friendly and great and our manager was really kind to us. The supervisors even let us ride a horse a few times, which definitely was a highlight. I would go back and visit them without a doubt.
Fettercairn youth horse project
Like Rebecca, I also worked at the Fettercairn Youth Horse Project. With the LUAS it took me about 30 minutes to get there. In the early hours we helped cleaning the stables and prepared the horses for the lessons. We also filled up Water and helped the girls leading the horses during lesson. There were several kinds of lessons for example therapy lessons and class sessions. We also got the chance to ride, which was so great and my favorite memory of Dublin. After that I thought a lot about riding, when I was back at home, but unfortunately I never got the chance to. During my work placement I also had the chance to work with some younger girls. These girls thought me how to ride and to lead. Of course Rebecca was a big help too, because she is a horsewoman. To sum up, I loved to work there, everything fitted perfectly. The manager, the girls, the horses. If I ever get the chance to go to Dublin again, I clearly would visit them and take a lesson to improve my riding.

During my stay in Ireland I got the opportunity to work in Irelands biggest gift shop, Carrolls Irish Gifts. I was stationed in one of their many smaller stores in Dame Street. Carrolls sells almost everything a gift shop can offer, from branded knitwear to plates with the history of your family name on it. I was a retail sales assistant at Carrolls. My main tasks consisted of assisting customers, who came from all around the globe, and provide them with informations. I've started at 9.30 am everyday and left at 4 pm, which gave me the freedom to explore Dublin after my shift.
I'm very thankful that I had the opportunity to work at Carrolls not only because I could improve my English but for all the nice co-workers I had. I'm still in touch with some of them.

During my stay in Ireland, I worked in a child care centre. It only took me 10 minutes by bus to get to work. I had to work from Monday till Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. The tasks I had to do were simple. The main time I had to play with the children and supervise and monitor the safety of them. Helping keep good hygiene and preparing meals and snacks for the kids were the other tasks I was obliged to do. The stuff there was very friendly and took good care of me. Particularly I learned how to handle difficult situations and to be more patient. I learned interesting things about different cultures and traditions. I am more confident now and i always try to be reliable. Because of the work with children i learned how to be a good rolemodel. I am very thankful for my work experience abroad and i will surely use my new skills in my future worklife.

Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport
The Clayton Hotel near the Airport was my workplace during the stay in Ireland. There I was occupied as a waitress for the breakfast and lunch service. I worked there for four weeks from monday to friday. I was the early bird of our Ireland group, because my work started at 7:30 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon. I had to wear black shoes and black trousers with a blue shirt because of a dresscode for all staff members at the Hotel. My daily work included,
