From Dalkey to Killiney
Vanessa Müller
On my second weekend in Ireland, I decided to explore the area outside of Dublin. Thus, I took the bus to the central train station in Dublin and from there the train to Dalkey. The journey to this little town only took about half an hour. During the train ride, you get a beautiful view of Ireland's coast and the Dublin Bay.
The weather wasn't perfect since it did slightly drizzle and I didn't have a plan on what exactly I wanted to do in Dalkey. Nevertheless, I started to walk toward the coastline. The sea was calm, and you could spot plenty of seagulls flying above the water. In the distance, I recognised a little island with a tiny tower-like building on top. I decided to examine a trail instead of following the road from where I came from (it wasn't the best idea as the trail had turned out to be a blind end and therefore I have had to go back to where I started). The path led through various kinds of bushes. I have to say, the nature in this area is marvellous and diverse; there were a lot of the trees and flowers I have never seen before. Besides some fishers, there weren't many people out on this day. Dalkey isn't like a regular town. The only buildings are enormous and impressive mansions. I can probably only dream of living in such a residence. After walking for a while, I came across a rocky beach. Even though the water was freezing, I could spot three women swimming in the sea. I took a short break and then resumed my trip by "hiking" up Killiney hill. Located on top of the hill are an Obelisk and a miniature pyramid. Besides the sights, you have a stunning view of the surrounding areas. After about three hours of walking from Dalkey to Killiney, I was finally at the train station in Killiney and on the way back home. |
One month in Dublin Selin Bereiter My goal was to see as much of Dublin as possible and I definitely succeeded. Since a very good friend of mine was in Dublin with me, we went somewhere else almost every day. In the beginning I was afraid that the weather wouldn't play along, because Ireland is known for the rain. However, the weather was actually really pleasant from time to time it was a little drizzly but that wasn't too bad. I think it was our first weekend when we were in Howht. This is a small island next to Dublin. We went there by train and then did a little round trip with a boat. In the city we were also very often. You can shop almost everywhere in Dublin and the choice is huge. And there are enough pubs in every corner. Very well known is the Temple Bar. As good as in every bar you go to you will hear live music and that gives you a very special feeling again. Of course we were on the Cliffs of Moher, too, and we also did various walks and hikes in the most different places. We have really experienced a lot in this month, but we could have done more but unfortunately the time was not enough. So in Dublin, you don't get bored that fast. |
Places worth seeing in Dublin

During my stay in Dublin I got to discover a lot of places. The first thing I did after arriving was going to the Temple Bar. I know this sounds very stereotype, but it is how it is. I stayed one month and it was still not enough to see everything. We not just hung up at the Temple Bar area, we also went to the little bars nearby, where less tourism and more local people enjoyed their night. It was great to see these mixed cultures and the kindness of the people.
Of course it's not all about going out at nights. With Selin and her Family we went hiking, we went out for dinner, ate Shepherd's Pie and drunk some Guinness. We also went to the Cliffs of Moher, Howth and Malahide. No matter where you are in Ireland, I'm sure you won't search long for a stunning view. It was peaceful. If you're more interested in shopping you should not miss the Temple Bar area. There are also a lot of shopping malls and it's quite easy to get there by bus or the LUAS. For example Jervis is one of them. Next to the Shopping Center which is located at the city center, you can find the LUAS. All in all it was a great experience. My personal favorite were the bars, where you really enjoyed Irish music and beer. |
Cliffs of moher
On Saturday the 13th of July our Group had booked a trip to the famous cliffs of Moher. Our teacher in Austria had arranged this trip and gave us the information we needed to get there.
Our Day started very early at 5:30 am. That was way too early for us, but we managed to get some rest in the bus later. A taxi picked us up and afterwards we got to the bus company that would bring us to the cliffs and to Galway. It took us 3-4 hours from Dublin to the Cliffs. We had a lot of fun because of our bus driver who tried to make the long drive as funny and interesting as possible. After the long drive we arrived at the cliffs. We were amazed by the beautiful views we saw. In addition to that we were very lucky with the weather conditions, as the weather was very sunny and warm. Our group had 40 minutes to explore the cliffs and, of course, to take some extraordinary pictures. The cliffs were full of tourists from all around the world. It was very cool to meet people from different countries, especially at a destination like that. After we saw the cliffs and made some funny pictures we got to the bus where our funny bus driver was already waiting for us. We again had to drive 1-2 hours to see some different cliffs and beautiful landscapes in Ireland. The bus driver always tried to make a break and to let us explore the nature. Our Erasmus Group always tried to film and to take as much photos as possible. After our short breaks and a drive of 3 hours we finally got to Galway. Galway is a famous city in Ireland, and we were excited to see some monuments and explore the city. A lot of people from our group went shopping. After 1 hour we headed back to our bus and we were officially on our way back home. More than half of the group slept the whole way back home to Dublin. But who could blame them? We walked the whole day and experienced a lot of Irelands most famous cities and sights. We want to thank our teacher Barbara Sonner for arranging this trip and letting us have a memory for a lifetime! Elena Immler, Elma Toromanovic |
